MDMK alleges secret understanding between Jayalalithaa, Chandrika

By Our Staff Reporter

Thanjavur Sept. 2. The MDMK presidium chairman, L. Ganesan, today alleged that there was secret understanding between the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, and the Sri Lanka President, Chandrika Kumaratunga, to derail the peace process on the island.

While the Sri Lankan Prime Minister, Ranil Wikremasinghe, had initiated peace measures and wanted to talk to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, the President seemed to be against peace initiatives, said Mr. Ganesan speaking at a meeting held here to welcome MDMK members, who are on a march from Tiruchi to Vellore condemning the arrest of Mr.Vaiko, general secretary under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.

R.T. Sababathy Mohan, student wing secretary, said even when Mr. Vaiko was behind bars, the MDMK supported the POTA but only opposed its misuse.

He said that 55 days had gone by since Mr. Vaiko was arrested. There was no incident of violence anywhere. The MDMK cadres agitated peacefully. During the march also, traffic was not being disrupted.

K. Udhayakumar and E. Sathya, youth wing secretaries, Ravichandran, town secretary, L.G. Anna, State youth wing assistant secretary, and V. Thamizhselvan, district students wing convener, participated in the march.

Our Vellore Staff Reporter reports:

The Union Minister of State for Finance, Gingee Ramachandran, who is also the MDMK deputy general secretary, said the party would decide its legal strategy to challenge the arrest of Mr. Vaiko after the Government filed a charge sheet against him.

"We will legally prove that the arrest is wrong'', he told reporters after meeting Mr. Vaiko in the central prison today.

The MDMK would hold a public meeting here on September 15 to celebrate the birth anniversaries of C.N. Annadurai and Periyar and to welcome party volunteers.
