This Day That Age
The Constituent Assembly of Kashmir had ratified the agreement arrived at in Delhi between Sheikh Abdullah and the Government of India on the proposed nature of the relations between the Indian Union and the State after its final accession. Excerpts from the Editorial: "The Kashmir Premier explained in great detail the implications of the various items of the agreement and was at pains to point out the directions in which the powers of this State would differ from those enjoyed by other Indian States which had acceded to the Indian Union. ... In the face of this frank and forthright declaration by a responsible Minister, it is somewhat mystifying to find Sheikh Abdullah denying that Kashmir enjoyed a special status in the Indian Constitution. The least that Indian should expect from her friends in Kashmir is that they should declare their intentions in the matter of their future relationship in clear terms and avoid contradictory and confusing statements. They are entitled to have their own conception of their future status, but statements denigrating that of the existing units of the Indian Union are not calculated to make it easy for India to show such special consideration to Kashmir as may appear to be justified by special circumstances.
