`Poonthura Swami' attains samadhi

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Aug. 19. `Poonthura Swami', spiritual solace of thousands in the southern districts of Kerala and neighbouring districts of Tamil Nadu, attained `samadhi' during wee hours today. He had turned 77 on July 10.

Born Madhusoodanan Pillai in a village on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border, the Swami had arrived at the coastal Poonthura village decades ago. He was at the time serving as a village officer. He had reached Poonthura to see the then `Poonthura Swami' and had stayed there on the Swami's advice. He subsequently came to be known by the same name.

Though treated with reverence by thousands, the Swami never gave any discourse and had always remained under a tree in the percincts of a temple, mostly without any hard food. His devotees had later built a hut around the place where he sat. He continued to be there almost his entire lifetime and breathed his last at 2.33 a.m. today. He was interred in `samadhi' near his lifelong abode this evening in the presence of hundreds of devotees.
