By Our Staff Correspondent

TUMKUR AUG. 15. The S.M. Krishna Government has registered "very good progress" on all fronts, the Minister for Higher Education, G. Parameshwar, has said.

Hoisting the national flag at Mahatma Gandhi Stadium here on Thursday morning, he said the Government had earned the confidence of the people by its good performance. He claimed that unprecedented success had been achieved in providing economic, social, and cultural freedom to the people. Karnataka stood first among States in the implementation of Indira Gandhi's 20-point programme of poverty alleviation, he added.

Listing the achievements, Dr. Parameshwar said: "We accorded priority to stimulation of economic progress, creation of job opportunities, and construction of infrastructure. Unproductive expenditure was cut. Allocation to irrigation, health, agriculture, education, and housing was increased. We involved the people in a big way in all our schemes."

He said the State's finances were well balanced. "Revenue has been increased to Rs. 18,798 crore, which is an increase of 18 per cent. As many as 254 companies have come forward to invest Rs. 27,000 crore,'' he added.

Dr. Parameshwar, who is the Minister in charge of Tumkur District, said 3.29 lakh schoolchildren were given free textbooks and uniform. Four stadiums had been constructed, and an additional three would be built. A swimming pool would be built at a cost of Rs. 1 crore.

Dr. Parameshwar presented prizes to the best student teams at the parade. They were led by Kumaraswamy C., Shreyas C. (Sarvodaya), Gurukiran, Shruti, Viswaradhya, B. Nagaraj, Rajesh (Siddaganga), Supriya, Chandrakanth (Vasavi), Anita (St. Mary's), Sheela (Nrupathunga), Manisha (Kannika), and Mahesh (Red Cross). Teams from Siddaganga, Grain Merchants', Bapuji, and Vasavi schools gave a band performance along with the Tumkur police band.

The Tumkur MP, G.S. Basavaraju, the Tumkur MLA, S. Shivanna, the Deputy Commissioner, Mallikarjun B. Dyaberi, and the Superintendent of Police, R. Hitendra, were present.

A large number of schoolchildren gathered at the stadium in the early hours, and some of them presented cultural programmes.
