Letters to the Editor
Sir, The contention of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, that she ought to have been invited for the swearing-in ceremony of the President is valid. The Chief Minister should have been invited. It is ironical that the Centre could invite some of the industrialists but not the Chief Ministers and Governors. One really wonders whether the Government cannot provide seating for a maximum of 50 or so Chief Ministers and Governors, even if all of them chose to attend. The excuse that it has been customary since 1950 to extend the invitation only on request does not hold water.
