James Street railway station to be revived

By Suresh Krishnamoorthy

HYDERABAD July 24. Decades after it became defunct, efforts to revive the 128-year-old James Street railway station in Secunderabad, are on in full swing. As the station building is a protected structure, officials of the Multi-Modal Transport Service (MMTS) are cautiously going about the revival in their endeavour to retain its heritage status. The James Street railway station, built in 1874, was the second station after Secunderabad on the Hyderabad-Wadi sector. A small structure that used to house the booking office, towards the Minister Road end, is also being revived. A heritage committee that went around the place some time ago insisted that care be taken to retain the heritage beauty of the place.

The columns of the main structure are being strengthened with cement concrete mixture by using the injection grouting method. To seal cracks on the columns, a special mixture of cement and polymer is being used. The special mixture is used for bondage, said K. Ramakrishna, Deputy Chief Engineer, MMTS project.

The main platform is also being extended. Foundation for the second platform towards the Ranigunj bus depot end has also come up. On the main platform side, workers are busy bringing in coping stones and pre-cast platform walling units.

A stretch towards the Minister Road that was occupied by traders selling iron and steel has been evacuated by the Government. It will be used for creating bus bays and parking facilities. When contacted, P. Ranadhir Reddy, Additional Commissioner (Transport), MCH, said every effort was being made to see that the Rs. 70-crore MMTS project was completed by November this year. The Government has been announcing that the project would be operationalised and the first service between Lingampally and Nampally, would run on November 1, the State Formation Day.
