Setback to Abu Salem gang

Mumbai July 17. Bollywood can breathe easier with the dreaded Abu Salem gang, which has been making systematic attempts to extort money from film industry personalities, suffering a major blow last night following an encounter with a special crime branch squad that left four gangsters dead.

The encounter in the Lokhandwala complex in north-west Mumbai, has been described as one of the major police operations of the year. ``With this encounter we feel that the Salem gang is virtually finished in the city,'' the police sources said. Abu Salem owes allegiance to absconding underworld don, Dawood Ibrahim, but runs his own parallel outfit.

These gangsters had threatened film star, Manisha Koirala earlier this year and had barged into the office of film producer, Xavier Marquis a couple of years ago. — UNI
