Case against Haribhaskar: final arguments begin

CHENNAI July 17. The `disproportionate wealth' case in which the former Chief Secretary, N.Haribhaskar, has been cited as the main accused, has reached the stage of completion with final arguments commencing today before the Special Judge-II, K.Rajamanickam.

After conclusion of examination of defence witnesses, the case was posted for final arguments.

The Special Public Prosecutor, M.Chandrasekaran, completed his arguments today. Arguments by defence counsel will begin tomorrow.

According to the case registered by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, the former IAS officer accumulated wealth to the tune of Rs.72 lakhs which was disproportionate to known sources of his income.

Mr.Haribhaskar's wife, Gomathiammal Ushadevi, daughter, Chitra P.Narayani, and son-in-law, Sudhir S.V.Rajan, are the other accused.

A total of 117 prosecution witnesses and eight defence witnesses were examined.

The chargesheet was filed on October 3, 2000 and charges framed on March 8, 2001.

Trial commenced on April 11, 2001.

All cases before the Special Court-II, except this one, were disposed of.
