Rain denies Vizag lead

VISAKHAPATNAM JULY 17. Rain denied first innings lead to Visakhapatnam over Vizianagaram, but East Godavari was lucky to gain the same against Srikakulam at the end of penultimate round-robin match in the ACA North Zone under-19 inter-district tournament at Vizianagaram on Wednesday, according to a report received here.

Visakhapatnam and East Godavari got into the last round-robin match starting on Thursday with eight points each. Vizianagaram plays Srikakulam. Each team has logged six points so far.

Vizianagaram could resume its first innings at the Vizzy Stadium only after lunch, thanks to rain, and made 136 for seven in reply to Visakhapatnam's total of 194 runs. Each team received three points.

At the MR College Stadium, where the match commenced at 10.30 a.m., Srikakulam, resuming at 68 for four, conceded a 56-run first innings lead to East Godavari after being all out for 107. K. Ravishankar picked up four wickets and P. Lakshmana Raju had three. Kumaraswamy waged a loan battle for Srikakulam with a knock of 62 runs.

In East Godavari's second innings, Srikakulam off-spinner L. Gopikrishna gained attention with a seven-wicket haul. M. Krishna Murthy remained unbeaten on 70 in East Godavari's second innings total of 190 runs. Mithun Varma scored 54 runs. Srikakulam made 60 for one in its second knock.

The scores: Visakhapatnam 194 drew with Vizianagaram 136 for seven (G. Jaganmohan 47 n.o. B. Ravikiran 33).

East Godavari 163 and 190 in 58 overs (M. Krishna Murthy 70 n.o., P. Mithun Varma 54, L. Gopikrishna seven for 55) drew with Srikakulam 107 in 56 overs (Kumaraswamy 62, K. Ravishankar four for 31, P. Lakshmana Raju three for 25) and 60 for one in 13.1 overs. — Our Staff Reporter
