NDA concern over Vaiko arrest

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI JULY 14. The massacre of civilians at Jammu and the arrest of the MDMK leader, Vaiko, under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) today came up for discussion at a meeting of the National Democratic Alliance, even as it authorised the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, to select its nominee for the vice-presidential election.

The NDA leaders expressed concern over the arrest of Mr. Vaiko, whose party is a constituent of the ruling coalition.

The meeting passed a resolution stating that the NDA was "gravely concerned'' over the arrest under POTA "a law that was enacted to deal with those indulging in terrorist acts in the country''.
