6 courts to try POTA cases

By A. Subramani

CHENNAI JULY 12 . The Madras High Court has identified six courts to be notified designated POTA (Prevention of Terrorism Act) Courts.

While I and V additional sessions courts in Chennai have been identified to try cases booked under the POTA, the existing communal clashes court will try POTA cases in Madurai.

The other places to have the designated special courts are Tiruchi, Tirunelveli and Coimbatore, where the respective principal district sessions court will handle POTA-related cases as well.

The High Court forwarded a list of the designated courts to the Government about two weeks ago, and the notification on their formal constitution is expected to be published shortly.

According to the High Court Registry, the Government request for formation of the special POTA courts was received about three months ago, shortly after the Prevention of Terrorism Ordinance had been issued by the Centre.
