Vinodh takes men's title

SIVAKASI JULY 7. Fifth seed G. Vinodh won the men's title, defeating the sixth seed V. Abhinay 4-11, 11-7, 11-5, 11-5, 11-4 in the final of the Lovely Cards third Tamil Nadu State ranking table tennis tournament conducted by Virudhunagar District table tennis association at MEPCO Schlenk Engineering College Indoor Stadium here on Sunday.

Both Vinodh and Abhinay belong to the same club — Young Men's Indian Association (Mylapore), Chennai — and this was the first time both of them were playing a final.

Both of them had strong serves and fluent forehand shots, but Vinodh was full of confidence after his semifinal victory over Abishek, who toppled the top seed N. Senthil earlier.

Abhinay also had a good record earlier as he beat second seed S. Raja in the semifinals and third seed Rajathkamal in the quarterfinals.

Abhinay took the first game at 11-4. But Vinodh, who took some time to settle down, came back strongly and took the next four games with effortless ease to win the title.

Fifth seed N. Arulselvi of Indian Bank won the women's title, defeating unseeded S. Prasanna of YMIA-M 11-9, 11-5, 8-11, 11-4, 11-5.

Much was expected from S. Prasanna, who beat the second-seeded J. Swarna in the semifinals and third-seeded K. Shamini in the quarterfinals. But Arulselvi, who ousted B. Bhuvaneswari in the semifinals, was in fine form and Prasanna could do nothing against her.

R. Abhisek, the fourth seed in the junior boys section, claimed the title defeating Sivananda Seshadhiri of Laws Academy 5-11, 14-16, 11-4, 12-10, 11-9, 11-9.

Other title winners: Sub-junior (Boys): R.S. Raja of Medimix-Chandra Academy (MDX-C); Junior Girls: K. Shamini (Indian Bank); Sub-junior: Swetha Kumaravel (MDX-C).

Mr. D.V. Sunder, Secretary TNTTA presided and Mr. K. Balamurugan, Managing Director, Lovely group of Industries, gave away the prizes. Mr. A.M.S.G. Ramamurthy, secretary, Virudhunagar T.T.A, welcomed the gathering. Mr. Billigraham, Physical Director, MEPCO S.E. College, proposed a vote of thanks.

Mr. Sunder, during his speech, was all praise for the Virudhunagar District Association officials, who made good arrangements with the cooperation of MEPCO Schlenk Engineering College authorities in a short notice.
