Samajwadi Party wants VHP leaders prosecuted

Mumbai July 6. The Samajwadi Party has sought the consent of Advocate-General of Maharashtra to prosecute Vishwa Hindu Parishad leaders, Ashok Singhal, Pravin Tagodia and others belonging to Bajrang Dal for their alleged utterances against the judiciary that it had no role in the Ayodhya dispute.

In a letter to the Advocate-General, Goolam Vahanvati, Sham Sunder Arya, general secretary of the party's Mumbai unit, has said that in view of section 15(B) of Contempt of Court Act, 1971, his consent in writing was essential.

He also enclosed a draft petition seeking contempt action against Mr. Singhal and Mr. Tagodia.

It was pleaded that these two leaders be held guilty of contempt and sent to jail for six months and fined Rs. 2000 each.

The letter alleged that in a meeting of the central advisory body of the VHP on June 22 at Hardwar, Mr. Singhal had declared that the Ram temple issue was not negotiable and that the judiciary could not decide matters of faith.

A VHP resolution on the issue and statements of its leaders were widely published in the newspapers.
