The Minister said work on the second phase of the bypass road linking Maduravoil with the Calcutta highway would be taken up soon. Meanwhile, clearance would be given for converting the bypass road from two lanes to four lanes. The bypass road was part of the golden quadrilateral project of connecting four major metropolitan cities. Though the target for completion of the 5,846 km-long project was December 2004, the Ministry was planning to complete it by December 2003. Another major project, in progress, was linking Kashmir to Kanyakumari in the north-south corridor and Silchar with Saurashtra in the eastwest corridor. This apart, the Minister said all major ports would have connecting links. Totally road connectivity for about 13,300 kms would be provided under various projects at a cost of Rs. 54,000 crores in another 10 years. The Union Minister for Environment and Forests, T.R.Baalu, demanded that an elevated highway from Ambattur industrial estate to Red Hills be included in the bypass project. The chairman of the National Highways Authority of India , Deepak Das Gupta, said the first phase of the bypass was completed at a total cost of about Rs. 90 crores.
