Inaugurating the four-day course, "Computer forensics: initial response team'', Mr. Ramulu stated that to keep track of computer-related crimes, the police department had purchased a machine from the UK. The machine helped in deciphering erased messages and files from computers. Twenty-nine officials are taking the course. The Director General of Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPRD), L.C. Amarnathan, launched four divisions of computer forensics, tampered document, imprint analysis and writing media in the office of Government Examiner of Questioned Documents housed in the CFSL complex, to mark the inauguration of the course. Addressing the participants, Mr. Amarnathan called upon the law-enforcement agencies to ensure that Internet, which is reaching wider areas, remained a field of utility and enjoyment and was not abused by criminals. For this purpose, people involved in law enforcement needed to update themselves and acquire skills. The course, he pointed out, assumed signifinance in the context of law brearkers using Internet to pose a threat to society as well as to national security. "It is a start in the prevention of people falling victims to designs of criminals in this computer world.'' It will ensure that the law enforcement agencies are adequately equipped to make sure that public security and national security are protected,'' Mr. Amarnathan observed. The Government Examiner of Questioned Documents, R.K. Jain, said the course would impart skills needed for safe storage and collection of digital evidence in computer related crimes. Their `initial response' would become the backbone of complete investigations. Earlier, the Deputy Government Examiner of Questioned Documents, Ch. Gandhi, welcomed the gathering and also proposed a vote of thanks.
