June 30 deadline for uniform number plates

By S. Vydhianathan

CHENNAI May 16. The Centre fixed June 30 deadline for adopting uniform number plates on vehicles.

All transport vehicles must have their registered number in black against yellow background, while other vehicles must have the number in black against white background.

The aim is to have high-security collapsible registration plates.

Authorities had not been able to make available the special number plates as they have to be supplied by chosen franchisees through the Regional Transport offices.

As a first step, the State Government has decided to implement the colour code from July.

Vehicle- owners are asked to adopt uniform standard size for number plates.

Regarding the supply of collapsible security number plates to vehicle owners, the Transport department sources said it was still being processed. Nearly 1,000 vehicles were being registered in the State everyday, including about 500 in the city. This is in addition to 52 lakh vehicles registered in the State.
