The Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, gave this assurance to Nirupam Bajpai, Development Advisor and Director of Harvard India Programme at the Centre for International Development, Harvard University, who called on her at the Secretariat today.
Dr. Bajpai told the Chief Minister that the economist, Jeffrey Sachs, who would be moving to Colombia University, was keen to set up the research centre in Chennai.
Dr. Bajpai presented to the Chief Minister papers relating to the studies conducted in Tamil Nadu, including the one on primary education in Madurai and Villupuram districts and another on the scope of information technology and global competitiveness of the Tamil Nadu Information Technology industry.
He also explained to her the impact created by the Sustainable Access in Rural India project in Madurai and Theni districts. When he told her he saw in person the rural people of Melur in Madurai using the Internet facility, Ms. Jayalalithaa expressed her desire to extend it to the entire State.The Chief Minister has approved the extension of the agreement entered into by the Centre for International Development of the Harvard University for undertaking research studies for the development of Tamil Nadu for a further period of three years from November 1, 2001, according to an official press release.
