As against proposals for drought-relief works to the tune of Rs.524.52 lakhs sent by the district administration to the Government, the latter allotted Rs.278.52 lakhs under the Natural Calamity Fund. Of this, Rs. 258.52 lakhs were to be spent in village panchayats, Rs.10 lakhs in town panchayats and Rs.10 lakhs in municipalities, the Tiruvannamalai Collector, Dheeraj Kumar, told newspersons here on Monday. Of the total allotment of Rs. 8.77 crores, Rs.470.25 lakhs constituted allotment to the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board, Rs.89 lakhs under the Eleventh Finance Commission and Rs.39.32 lakhs through the general funds of the panchayats/panchayat unions. The works to be undertaken in the village panchayats comprised installation of 205 borewells and handpumps at a cost of Rs.71.75 lakhs, 40 new borewells without pumping room at a cost of Rs.100 lakhs, installation of 90 mini power pumps at a cost of Rs.58.77 lakhs, extension of pipelines at a cost of Rs.10 lakhs and replacement of 72 pumpsets at a cost of Rs.18 lakhs. A total of 2525 power pumps and 9618 handpumps would be installed in village panchayats, 81 power pumps and 518 handpumps in town panchayats and 32 power pumps and 411 handpumps in municipalities. Under the TWAD Board scheme, 46 works on rejuvenation of power pumps and the installation of 550 mini power pumps are to be taken up at a cost of Rs.470.25 lakhs, the Collector said. Mr. Dheeraj Kumar said work on the drinking water supply scheme for Arni municipality, the only municipality to be left out, began last month. The Tiruvannamalai, Cheyyar and Vandavasi municipalities were having independent drinking water supply schemes. Work on the Arni scheme was expected to be completed by March next year, he said. As far as town panchayats were concerned, works on independent drinking water supply schemes were completed last year in Keezhpennathur and Chengam and completed two years ago in Polur. Work orders have been issued for a scheme in Vettavalam town panchayat. Proposals have been sent to the Government for implementation of schemes in Desur and Peranamallur town panchayats and they would be taken up before the end of the current year, the Collector said.
