'India should intervene'

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI MARCH 30. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) today ``strongly condemned'' the assault mounted by Israel against the Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat, and demanded that the Vajpayee Government take up the issue and put pressure on Israel to vacate its occupation.

The party's politburo said the siege of Mr. Arafat's office in Ramallah and the shelling by Israel was indicative of the fact that Israel backed by the U.S. was ``unequivocally announcing'' that it would not accept any proposals for peace in the region. The fundamental right of the Palestinians to a homeland was ``non-negotiable'', the party said adding that ``Israeli obduracy'' has created an alarming situation in the region. It suggested that the recently-concluded Arab Summit in Beirut had endorsed the Saudi initiative for wider Arab-Israeli peace settlement.
