Tamil Nadu-Chennai
By Our Staff Reporter
At a review meeting, chaired by the south Chennai MP and Environment Minister, T.R. Baalu, the officials said a separate overbridge or underbridge could be constructed across the tracks to facilitate easy access from the eastern side. The issue came to the fore as the Union Minister had sought lowering of the height of the rotary of the proposed Thirusoolam overbridge, as it would affect the aesthetics of the airport. Mr. Baalu requested the railway authorities to coordinate with the National Highways for preparing a fresh drawing of the Rs.12-crore project, aimed at decongesting traffic before the Chennai air terminal. Referring to a proposal for a pedestrian subway between the airport and the Thirusoolam railway station, Mr. Baalu said he could sanction funds for the project from his Local Area Development Fund. As such the Railways, the Airports Authority of India and the National Highways are expected to apportion the cost among them. Mr. Baalu, who inspected the work on the Velachery MRTS terminal, was told that water would stagnate on the southern side of the stabling yard, though the railways had provisioned drains from the northern side. This was due to concrete wall constructed at the mouth of a culvert on Madipakkam Road. Further, the sewer pipeline of the Alandur municipality also ran parallel to the culvert. Overseeing the St.Thomas Mount subway, Mr. Baalu said the project was complete and the Railway Minister, Nitish Kumar, would participate in the inaugural. He also reviewed the work on the Thillai Ganga Nagar subway at Nanganallur, and at Tambaram. The Southern Railway General Manager, V.Anand, and Highways officials accompanied the Minister.
