New Kannada version of Constitution released

BANGALORE, MARCH 27. The Directorate of Translations under the Ministry of Law and Parliamentary Affairs has brought out a Kannada version of the Constitution.

The diglot (English-Kannada) edition, the third Kannada version of the Statute to be brought out, was released on Wednesday by the Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs, D.B. Chandre Gowda. He also released a Kannada version of 38 State Acts.

The 288-page Kannada version of the Constitution will be useful to judicial officers, lawyers, law students, officers of various departments, and others interested in popularising Kannada as the official language of the State. It was prepared by the Directorate of Translations with the cooperation of the State Language (Legislative) Commission.According to a communication, this is the first diglot of the Constitution incorporating all the amendments including the Constitution (83rd Amendment) Act, 2000.

The first Kannada version was prepared and published in 1952. Those involved in the preparation of the book were Kannada doyens and litterateurs, C.K.Venkataramaiah, R.R. Divakar, and T.N. Sreekantaiah. The second edition was published in 1985 after a revision by the Directorate of Translations and the then Kannada Official Language (Legislative) Commission. Mr. Chandre Gowda commended the directorate for completing the work in record time. He hoped other State and Central Acts would be translated soon.

The Director of the Directorate of Translations, Javaraiah, told The Hindu that the work was completed in five months.
