Move to close schools flayed

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM MARCH 26. The Leader of the Opposition, V. S. Achuthanandan, has asked the Antony Government to give up its "ill-advised decision'' to shut down over 2,600 schools in the State. Inaugurating a 36-hour sathyagraha before the Secretariat, organised by the School Samrakshana Samithi here today, he said the decision, if implemented, would deprive over two lakh children access to education. Almost all the achievements of the State so far could be traced to the facility for free, compulsory and universal education which had been existing here. The Antony Government's new policy would serve only to erode the excellent system which existed here by taking education beyond the reach of the poor, he alleged.
