Women scientists honoured

NEW DELHI MARCH 20. Two women scientists were today given the national awards for `women's development through the application of science and technology' instituted by the Department of Science and Technology. Five others got the national woman bio-scientist awards of the Department of Biotechnology.

The winners are: Vibha Gupta of Centre of Science for villages, Wardha, Kiran Rawat of Himalayan Environmental Studies and Conservation, Uttaranchal, Kasturi Datta of Jawaharlal Nehru University, Lakshmi Sita of Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, Anuradha Lohia of Bose Institute, Kolkatta, Sudha Nair of M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation, Chennai and Suchitra Banerjee of Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, Lucknow,

While Dr. Vibha Gupta and Dr. Kiran Rawat won the DST awards for their work at the grassroot levels for women's development through the application of S&T, Dr. Kasturi Datta and Prof. Lakshmi Sita bagged the DBT's award for senior scientists and Dr. Anuradha Lohia, Dr. Sudha Nair and Dr. Suchitra Banerjee the DBT's award for young scientists. The DST awards and the DBT's senior scientist awards carried a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh each, while the DBT's young scientist awards carried a cash component of Rs. 50,000 each. The awards were presented by the Union Science and Technology Minister, Murli Manohar Joshi. The Government was planning to provide more rewards and incentives and generate a more conducive environment for women scientists and entrepreneurs.
