Arjun Ray seeks retirement

NEW DELHI FEB. 27. The Commander of the Army's crucial 14 Corps guarding Kargil, Siachen and the Sino-Indian border, Arjun Ray, has put in his papers seeking premature retirement, more than a year before he was due to retire.

Lt. Gen. Ray, a highly distinguished infantry officer, may be relieved by March middle, highly-placed Defence sources said.

The General has emerged as a popular figure in the remote mountainous region with his Corps taking up a civic campaign to win over the hearts and minds of the people. He was the brain behind the Army Operation `Sadhbhavana' aimed at bringing the people of Turtuk village into the national mainstream.
