BMS national meet begins today

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 21. Over 4,000 delegates from all parts of the country are expected to participate in the 13th national conference of the Bharatheeya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) which begins here tomorrow.

At a press conference here today, the State general secretary of BMS, N. M. Sukumaran, said the three-day conference would discuss vital issues confronting the working class in the country.

The topics that figure in the agenda include the disinvestment programme of the Union Government, the impact of the WTO agreement on the country's economy, the problems of the unorganised workers and the changes being incorporated in the labour laws.

Mr. Sukumaran said the BMS, the biggest trade union in the country, had 30 workers' federations affiliated to it. These federations represented nearly 4,000 individual unions with 65 lakhs workers registered under them. Kerala was hosting a national conference of BMS for the first time.

The conference flag will be hoisted at 10 a.m. tomorrow at the Putharikkandam Ground in the city by the chairman of the Second Labour Commission, G. Raveendra Varma. The inaugural function will be chaired by the national president of the BMS, Ramanbhai Shah.

Top leaders of the BMS and other premier trade unions in the country like the CITU, AITUC and INTUC will address the meeting.

Discussion on the report of the BMS general secretary is slated for the afternoon of the same day. The delegates will take up organisation issues for discussion on Saturday morning. There is also a women's conference in the programme to deliberate on issues relevant to them.
