PATHANAMTHITTA, FEB. 20. The Kerala Council of Churches (KCC) has called upon the Government to take immediate steps to end the ongoing strike by Government employees and teachers which has badly affected life in the State. A resolution passed by the KCC executive committee the other day said that it was an irony to see the Government curtailing the benefits of its employees in the name of austerity measures, after ignoring administrative extravagance as well as pleas to reduce the size of the Cabinet. The resolution condemned the Government move to suppress the staff stir by enforcing ``black laws'' like the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA). It was not advisable for the Government to jump into unilateral decisions as part of its economic policies in the backdrop of globalisation, it added. The resolution urged the Government not to take any economic policy decisions that could lead to a sort of economic anarchy in the State. The resolution condemned the Government move to close down certain schools which were identified as uneconomic ones. The KCC president Bishop Sam Mathew presided over the meet.
