THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 12. The CPI(M) State secretariat has asked the Chief Minister, A.K. Antony, to expel the Education Minister, Nalakath Soopy, from the Cabinet in the light of the former Commissioner of Entrance Examinations, Alphons Kannamthanam's revelation that the Minister had directed him to manipulate the entrance examination results last year. In a statement here today, the CPI(M) secretariat said Mr. Soopy had lost the right to remain in the Cabinet `even for a single moment' after Mr. Kannamthanam's affidavit in this regard before the Kerala High Court. The affidavit showed that the Minister had been involved in a corrupt deal and had violated his oath of office and secrecy, the CPI(M) leadership said. The statement pointed out that Mr. Soopy had been accused of having interfered directly to get the certificate of a candidate figuring in the ranklist replaced with another so that he could secure admission to a medical course. The Minister had then denied the allegation. However, now Mr. Kannamthanam had endorsed the allegation through his affidavit. This showed that by interfering in the transparent and honest conduct of the entrance examinations, the Minister had breached his oath of office, the CPI(M) secretariat said.
