Enron officials refuse to testify
By Sridhar Krishnaswami
WASHINGTON, FEB. 7. Two top former officials of the Enron Corporation have refused to testify before Congress today, invoking their right against self-incrimination.
``On the advice of my counsel, I respectfully decline to answer the questions,'' Andrew Fastow, Enron's former Chief Financial Officer, said. Another Enron official, Michael Kopper, also took the Fifth Amendment.
Both Mr. Fastow and Mr. Kooper are believed to have been in the know of the numerous, yet dubious partnerships Enron is said to have put together. The former top executives of the Houston-based energy corporation were before the House Energy and Commerce Oversight Committee.
Earlier this week, the former CEO of Enron, Kenneth Lay, refused to come before law makers, his lawyer making the argument that his client cannot come before Congressional Committees where conclusions have already been reached.
