Firing probe: police lay claim to bullet
By Our Staff Reporter
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 2. The police official who is investigating the December 28 Thumba police firing that led to the death of a local resident, Varghese, has asked the Latheen Katholica Aikyavedi to hand over a bullet which was claimed to have been recovered from the incident spot.
In an official letter to the Aikyavedi president, James Fernandes, the Assistant Commissioner of Police (DCRB), C.S. Ramachandran, said the bullet had to be sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) to be tested along with other bullets retrieved from the spot.
The investigating team had earlier retrieved several bullets and empties from the spot and sent these to the FSL for testing by ballistic experts. The FSL report is learnt to be almost ready.
It is a routine procedure for the investigating official to seek custody of all material evidence connected with the incident, according to a source. The evidence would be admissible in a court of law only if it is tested by an expert authority which is competent to do so.
The Aikyavedi, which has filed a private complaint in the court of the Judicial First Class Magistrate against the City Police Commissioner, Rajan Singh, and several police officials, had submitted before the court the bullet in question, 30 empties and a live cartridge which was claimed to have been retrieved from the incident spot.
