`Dredge port to prevent damage to vessels'
By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, FEB. 2. A. Anbalagan, MLA (AIADMK) from Uppalam constituency, said here on Friday that the administration should take steps to ensure that the boats and cargo vessels unloading goods at the port do not suffer damage due to accumulation of sand at the estuary in the port.

Referring to the difficulty of a barge carrying petro-chemical products to the shore in managing the accumulated sand on Friday he said a part of the barage had also suffered damage as it had to negotiate the sand.

The dredging of sand to a depth of some four and half metres should have been done. But only a metre or so had been dug out. This was the reason why the vessel got stuck and there was also threat of chemicals flowing over into the sea affecting fish.

As the barge could not get out of sand, fishermen had to proceed to Cuddalore to land.

Meanwhile, official sources said timely action was taken to ensure that the barge was safely anchored in the backdrop of the rough sea. The source said that as soon as the inclement weather improved steps were taken to protect the vessel The source denied any damage to the craft and the cargo was also safe.
