Anjali misses gold in tie-shoot
NEW DELHI, FEB. 2. Anjali Vedpathak missed the air rifle gold in a tie-shoot, 10.3 to 10.6, even as the Indian shooters asserted themselves on the second day of the Baltic Cup in Aarhus, Denmark.
After leading the eight finalists with a 396, Anjali shot a 102.9 in the final, to be on par with Dorte Christiansen of Denmark who shot a 103.9 in the final. Anjali, who had won a tie-shoot in Germany to take the gold with a total of 502.2, emerged second best this time.
The Indian women's team also missed the gold to Japan by one point.
In the junior section, Meena Kumari had an impressive 393, but missed a medal because of a 97 last card, when both the silver and bronze went for the same total of 393.
In the men's section, Ashok Kumar Shahi of the Army surprised the pack, including Abhinav Bindra, by bagging the silver. He led with a 596 after the preliminaries following a series of 100, 99, 97, 100, 100, 100, but shot a 101.3 in the final, in missing the gold by 1.5 points.
Abhinav had only a 591 in the preliminary phase and thus missed a medal by 0.2 points despite a 103.8 in the final.
Samaresh Jung led the pack in the air pistol event with a 577, but a 97.5 final, caused by an 8.5 ninth shot put paid to his hopes for the gold, which eluded his grasp by 1.1 points.
