Colourful start to youth festival
By Our Staff Reporter

KOZHIKODE, JAN. 16. The 42nd State Schools Youth Festival commenced at the Malabar Christian College (MCC) ground here today on an optimistic note. Amidst a galaxy of leaders and prominent citizens, speakers evoked nostalgic memories of the literary and artistic traditions of Kozhikode where the fete was being held after a gap of eight years.

Music by a 42-member orchestra of music teachers set the tone for the youth fete, slated to be one of the largest student confluences in Asia. Meanwhile, a group of art teachers sketched on their canvases as last year's Kalathilakam, Ambili Devi, lit a traditional lamp. For the first time, the youth festival has a Web site_www yuvajanolsavam. com

In his keynote address, the Education Minister, Nalakath Soopy, while stressing the primacy of encouraging artistic talents among children appealed for the spirit of healthy competition to be maintained. Such an attitude was vital for the smooth conduct of the event, he said. He appealed to parents and others to assist in ushering in such an atmosphere.

Youth festivals ought to be a venue for artistic appreciation. At the same time, attempts should be made to maintain creativity and talent at these programmes, he added.

The Minister promised that the Government would initiate steps to provide assistance to talented students from economically weaker sections to participate in such fetes. He suggested that the youth festivals could be unified and expenses reduced.

The Director of Public Instruction, V.P.Joy, the Kozhikode Mayor, Thottathil Raveendran, the MPs, M.K. Premajam, K. Muraleedharan, the MLAs, A. Sujanapal, T.P.M. Saheer, C.K. Nanu, C. Moyinkutty, A.C. Shanmughadas, V.K.C. Mammad Koya and Binoy Viswom, among others were present.

The events commenced today with competitions in Mohiniyattom at the Malabar Christian College ground (stage I), with 19 participants. More than 5,000 students are participating in 70 events in the four-day festival. The judges for the dance items including Mohiniyattom, Kuchupudi and Bharatanatyam have come from outside the State.
