Pawan Hans to augment fleet

NEW DELHI, DEC. 20. The Government-owned Pawan Hans Helicopter Limited is planning to acquire four light and 10 medium helicopters during the Tenth Five-Year Plan, the Union Minister for Civil Aviation, Mr. Shahnawaz Hussain, said today at a meeting here of the members of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee attached to his Ministry.
Eight medium choppers would be disposed of if they could not be deployed onshore, the Minister said. Finance for new acquisition would be made available from internal resources. At present, Pawan Hans had a fleet of 30 helicopters, he added.
The Minister informed the Committee that Pawan Hans was in the process of acquiring two medium helicopters for which orders had been placed after obtaining Government approval. Tender had been floated for the two choppers and the technical bids were under evaluation.
Mr. Hussain said additional maintenance facility had been set up for periodic check-up of cockpit voice recorder installed on the Dauphin Helicopter. Work on a facility for deep maintenance of engine module 2 and life extension check of floating gear of Dauphin helicopter had been taken up. The Board of Directors of Pawan Hans had also approved in principle the enhancement of maintenance facilities.
The Minister pointed out that the Arunachal Pradesh Government had approved in principle carrying out of air maintenance by MI-172 helicopter of Pawan Hans.
