GUNTUR, NOV. 30. An activist of the People`s War Group was killed in a fierce exchange of fire with police lasting over an hour near Dachepalli in Guntur district in the wee hours today. Police believe that the deceased was Hari, an action team member of the Chandravanka dalam of People`s Guerilla Army (PGA) operating in the Dachepalli area. Police also recovered a nine mm pistol and a detonator from the scene.
Acting on specific information that the PGA was planning to plant landmines on the busy Guntur-Hyderabad road via Dachepalli which is frequented by VIPs, the police sent special teams for search operations. As the special team consisting of 12 members was going on foot searching the road and bridges for any mines in the reach of Srinagar, Ramapuram and Pondugala villages at 3 am, they encountered five members of PGA moving in the area.
The PGA members opened fire and the police retaliated and there was fierce exchange of fire for over an hour. When the firing stopped completely from the other side, the police party went about searching the area at 5.30 am and found one body lying in a pool of blood. Police believe that two or three more members of the dalam might have been injured in the firing but escaped under cover of darkness.
Local people identified the deceased as Hari. According to the police, Hari was involved in several cases like murdering Atchi Reddy and Pitchi Reddy, farmers of Ramapuram in November 1991. He was also involved in attacking the police stations of Yerragondapalem and Sunnipenta to take away weapons.
