Now, Somnath plans a tea party
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI, NOV. 30. Mr. Somnath Chatterjee, who set the political scene abuzz with the dinner he hosted for estranged Opposition leaders last Monday, plans to host a tea party next week. The guest list this time is being expanded to include MPs from the Rajya Sabha.
Mr. Chatterjee appears to have emerged as the new ``facilitator'' of Opposition unity. Most political observers see him as ideally suited for his new role.
The Opposition leaders want to build on the momentum generated by the ``dinner,'' and a series of social get togethers over `iftaar' parties and birthdays have been planned in the next few weeks. On December 6, Mr. Yadav will host an `iftaar' party and the guest list is likely to include Ms. Gandhi.
Though the Congress president's birthday falls on December 9, no formal celebrations have been planned. However, her `iftaar' party, scheduled for December 11, will be a keenly watched affair, as invitations are being sent out to leaders and chief whips of all the parties in Parliament, except those of the BJP and the Shiv Sena. Mr. Pawar's birthday celebration in Mumbai, on December 12, is likely to be another occasion for sending political messages. His guest list includes the names of leaders of all political parties.
