Opinion - Letters to the Editor

Strange magnanimity

Sir, - With reference to the SBI being penalised by the Federal Reserve of the U.S., it is intriguing that even though the amount involved is a whopping Rs. 35 crores, not many voices were raised.

On its part the SBI readily parted with the money, yet maintained that it was not in the wrong. What a strange magnanimity! Will the bank act similarly in an ordinary customer's case, if ``an error of judgment'' on a much smaller scale is made? As for the amount involved, it is more than half that has been keeping the Bofors affair simmering for nearly 15 years, though not in real terms. Indeed, the SBI management should count itself lucky that its bungling has faded from the public mind in as short as 15 days!
