Archery: Delhi, Manipur on target

PATIALA, NOV. 28. Delhi's trio of Ravinder Sharma, Radhey Shyam and Dinesh put together a sterling performance and eclipsed strong contenders Jharkhand and Assam on way to the Indian style team gold in the archery competition of the National Games at the Polo ground here on Wednesday.

Three archers from each team shot at targets placed at 50 and 30 metres. The cumulative scores formed the team's score while the individual aggregate decided in the individual championship.

The women's team-title race went on expected lines as L. Suni Devi (577 points) showed Manipur the way and in the process, claimed the individual honours, too. Although Jharkhand's Violet Murmu also had a similar tally but Suni was awarded the gold for having more number of `perfect 10s'. B. Sophia Devi, also of Manipur, claimed the bronze.

The men's individual gold went to Services' Ran Bahadur Tamang (614 points), with Assam's Dipul Boro and U. Prasad taking the other two medals, in that order after tallying an identical 602. But Boro was placed higher since he had 13 shots of 10s, to Prasad's 12.

Delhi, fourth in the last National championship at Amravati, notched its best ever score of 1768 to force Assam (1727) and Bengal (1721) to lesser medals. Ravinder Singh shot 285 points in the 50 metres and 307 over 30 metres to contribute 592 to the tally. Radhey Shyam tallied one less than Ravinder while Dinesh shot 585.

Women: 1. L. Suni Devi (Mani) 577, 2. Violet Murmu (Jhar) 577, B. Sophia Devi (Mani) 556.

Team championship: Men: Delhi (Ravinder Sharma, Radhey Shyam and Dinesh) 1768; 2. Assam (Dipul Boro, Binod Singh and Biswajit Das) 1727; 3. Bengal (Gopal Sabar, Sanjay Shankar and C.R. Baghel) 1721.

Women: Manipur (L. Suni Devi, B. Sophia Devi and B. Geetanjali Devi) 1678; 2. Jharkhand (Violet Murmu, Sakro Besra and Geera Biruli) 1528; 3. Assam (Pallavi Das, Anima Basumatary and Ranjumani Baruah) 1526.
