'Parents must be role models'

PONDICHERRY, NOV. 28. The Lieutenant Governor, Dr. Rajani Rai has
called upon parents and teachers to conduct themselves as role
models in upholding moral values in daily life and make an
indelible impression on the young children.
Distributing cash awards to students who were top rankers in the
public examinations during 2000-2001 academic year in the union
territory, on the occasion of the celebration of the `Children`s
Day' organised by Department of Education on Wednesday she said
value-based education was the need of the hour. Wholesome
education should mould the character of the individuals, she
said.
Expressing concern over the prescription of excessive books even
for nursery and elementary school children, she said there should
be no subjection of the younger generation to disappointments.
The healthy growth of children particularly from the poorer
families should be given primary attention. She stressed the need
for encouragement of education among the girls.
The Chief Minister, Mr. N. Rangasamy who presided over the
function referred to the steps taken by the Administration to
tone up education. He said provision of buildings replacing the
thatched sheds formed the highlight of development of
infrastucture. He said teacher posts remaining vacant would be
filled without delay. Sports activities would be encouraged.
The Tourism and Education Minister Mr. K. Lakshminarayanan who
felicitated the students said he had earlier at a press conferece
announced certain measures with the support of the Lieutenant
Governor and the Chief Minister.
Mrs. M. Sathiavathi, Education Secretary, Mr. G. Ragesh Chandra,
Director of Education and Mr. E. Venu, Joint Director were among
those who spoke.
