Mayoral poll on Nov. 24

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, NOV. 17. The State Government on Saturday issued a gazette notification reserving the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor for candidates belonging to the General category.

This also puts an end to speculation that the Mayor's term might be extended from one year to 30 months.

The Government issued a notification regarding the formation of the new 100-member BMP Council. Elections to the posts of Mayor, Deputy Mayor and eight standing committees will be held on November 24, the day on which the term of the outgoing Council ends.

The reservation was notified even as the City MLAs were planning to meet the Chief Minister, Mr. S.M.Krishna, to discuss the issue and to decide on the consensus Mayoral candidate, sources said.

Although aspirants belonging to all categories can contest under the General category, contenders belonging to Vokkaliga and Lingayat communities will be given preference as they will not be eligible to contest under any other category. Besides, the posts cannot be reserved for General category in the next four years as the Government has fixed the category on rotation basis, sources said.

This leaves Mr. C.M.Nagaraj (Gayatrinagar), Mr. M.Lakshminarayana (Gali Anjaneyaswamy Devasthana), Mr. B.M.Narsimhamurthy (Nandini Layout) and Mr. B.T.Srinivas Murthy (Azadnagar) as front runners for the post. All the four are Vokkaligas.

Mr. P.R.Ramesh (V.V.Puram), Mr. K.Chandrashekar (Hanumanthnagar), Ms. G.Padmavathy (Prakashnagar), Ms. Mumtaz Begum (Shivajinagar), Mr. N.L.Narendra Babu (Nagpur) and Mr. B.S.Puttaraju (Amarjyothinagar) are in the race for the Mayor's post. However, no major contenders have emerged for the Deputy Mayor's post.
