Busmen held for defying ban
By Our Special Correspondent
CHENNAI, NOV. 17. Hundreds of `striking' bus workers, along with
their family members, courted arrest near the Metropolitan
Transport Corporation headquarters here, as they attempted to
take out a rally defying a police ban today.
A few buses were stoned as the protest ended with the arrests.
The police chased away the unruly elements.
According to the convener of the action council of transport
workers' trade unions, Mr. A. Soundararajan, the strike, which
entered the eighth day, would continue until the workers achieved
their demand of 20 per cent bonus. Mass arrests and
`intimidatory' tactics by the Government would not deter workers
from continuing their agitation, he said.
