Gandhi foundation to collect funds for transport staff

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, NOV. 13.

Moved by the plight of the public in the face of the transport workers' strike, the Gandhi Peace Foundation (GPF), Chennai, proposed to ``collect money from students'' and offer the sum to the workers.

According to the GPF's secretary, Mr. S. Kulandhaisamy, the strike has left the stranded public at the mercy of autorickshaw drivers. During an interaction with the `Youth for Peace" volunteers at the JGVV School, Avadi, on Saturday (when the strike began), a VII standard student, V. Avinash, suggested that students contribute a part of their pocket money to help the employees to resume work ``on a humanitarian basis''. Considering the suggestion, the GPF secretary urged interested schools to collect funds from students ``may it be a rupee or 50 paise'' and send it by DD or cheque directly to the Transport Minister in the Secretariat, Fort St. George, Chennai.

Along with it, an appeal could be sent to the workers, asking them to seek alternative means to get their demands met instead of putting people to hardship. The appeal could be addressed to Mr. Swaran Singh, Managing Director, Metropolitan Transport Corporation, Chennai-2.

`Friends of Gandhi' (a wing of the GPF), he said was sending its contribution of Rs. 1,001 by DD.
