Colours form Kerala

Rabindranath Tagore's words "Life's aspirations come in the guise of children", were found in the paintings of the youngsters from Kerala as their aspirations were reflected in their work.

The Hindu - Young World Painting Competitions held on October 21, simultaneously at the Institution of Engineers Hall, Thiruvananthapuram, and at the ToC-H Indoor stadium in Kochi, saw a surge of creativity and colour across the canvas.

While the junior category had "Inside a post office", "Helping baby brother to walk", and "Boat race", for topics to choose from, the seniors had to contend with "The Onam scene", "Pedestrian crossing a busy road", and "An election procession".

In Thiruvananthapuram, braving heavy showers, 300 children settled down with enthusiasm, paintbrush and palette, to choose their topic.

In the junior category, P. K. Anupama from Chinmaya Vidyalaya came first while C.Nikita of Holy Angels Convent, Nanthancode, and J.A. Saranjith of Abraham Memorial HS, Tiruvalla, came second and third respectively.

The senior category had R. G. Anoop Chand of the Mannam Memorial school, Niramonkara, coming first, A. G.Indu of St. Joseph Anglo Indian School, Kozhikode, winning the second prize and S.R. Rajee of Christ Nagar School, Thiruvananthapuram, the third prize.

In Kochi, fantasy took over the mundane, when more than 325 children gave wing to their imagination with colours.

Among the seniors, Jayashree K.G. of Holy Family C.G.H.S., Chembukkavu, Thrissur, walked away with the first prize while V.S.Muralikrishna of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Newsprint Nagar, Kottayam, and Shyam K.V. of K.M.E.A.Al Manar Residential Public School, Kuzhivelipaddy, were awarded the second and the third prizes respectively.

The first prize winner in the junior category was Suparna S. Nair from Presentation HS, Chevayur, Kozhikode, while Radhakrishnan B of Bhavan's Adarsha Vidyalaya, Kakkanad, came second and Pavin Fathima Ashraf of K.M.E.A. Al Manar Residential Public School, Kuzhivelipaddy won the third prize.

The finalists were selected after a screening based on entries invited for the preliminary round earlier, where more than 700 entries had been received.

Inputs from G. Mahadevan (Thiruvananthapuram) and Renu Ramanath (Kochi).
