A great escape?

Sir, - Your Editorial, `Abu Salem's Escape' (Oct. 30) echoes the concern of all right-thinking citizens particularly in the light of the September 11 incidents. Anyone who analyses the diplomatic adroitness of our policy-makers since 1947 will find that there is a total lack of national interest in evaluation and a complete faux pas on the diplomatic front. The cacophony of the leaders in the Opposition and the inertia of politicians holding the reins, on such international matters, paints India as a nation with no reckoning even among very small nations and the escape of Abu Salem is a case in point.

M. Rajaraman,

Chennai

Sir, - Your Editorial `Abu Salem's escape': The escape is not at all surprising given the track record of official bungling in our country. When ordinary criminals escape from prison or on the way to their production in the court, do you think a criminal of Abu Salem's ilk would find it a difficult job to do? Even if he had been caught and lodged in some jail here, he would have shown a clean pair of heels in no time, thanks to his connections, political and otherwise.

P.G. Menon,

Chennai
