Woman hangs son, self after testing HIV positive

By Our Staff Reporter

SRIKAKULAM, NOV. 2. In a tragic incident at K Polavalasa in Polaki mandal of the district, a woman killed her three-year-old son and hanged herself after they reportedly tested HIV positive. The woman, Simma Santamma, 25, lived at Tangivanipeta near Srikakulam with her husband Rama Rao and two sons.

Police said a month ago Rama Rao, a labourer, Santamma and her younger son, Srinu, 3, tested positive for HIV. They had gone to a hospital at Narsannapeta and also to a laboratory here for tests, it was learnt. After the villagers came to know of it, the family was ill-treated. As Rama Rao was not staying at home, Santamma had come to live with her brother at K Polavalasa. on Thursday, Santamma told her aged mother that she was returning to Tangivanipeta. However, she had apparently killed her son, Srinu, and hanged herself. The bodies were found hanging from two mango trees on a piece of land at K Polavalasa, taken care of by her brother, early on Friday morning. He had gone to his in-laws' place on Thursday to celebrate Gouri Purnima, a local festival.

However, officials said no HIV positive case was reported from Tangivanipeta. The Polaki sub-inspector, Mr. M. Satyanarayana, said the bodies were sent for postmortem.
