Pak. official involved in espionage
By Our Staff Reporter
NEW DELHI, NOV. 2. A spy racket, active in procuring confidential
fact-files pertaining to the security of the Indian naval bases,
has been busted here with the arrest of a Pakistan High
Commission official and three civilian staff of the Indian Naval
Headquarters.
The Special Cell of Delhi police, under the supervision of the
Assistant Commissioner, Mr. Rajbir Singh, arrested Gulam Shabbir
Khan, official of the Pakistan High Commission, Mohammad Abdul
Samad, an assistant grade official with the Directorate of Marine
Engineering, Francis Prakash, a daftari, and Babul Nath Maurya,
junior design officer, Naval Headquarters.
Police had received information that a civilian employee of the
Naval Headquarters - Samad - was passing on defence-related
documents to an official of the Pakistan High Commission against
payments.
A team was formed to trail the activities of the naval staff. It
was revealed that two others, Prakash and Babul Nath, were also
involved in the espionage ring, active for the past one-and-half
years. After collecting sufficient information, the Special Cell
waited to nab the four.
The team was tipped off that on Thursday, Samad would come to the
Tandoor Refreshment Point on Vikas Marg with his accomplices to
deliver secret documents to the Pakistan High Commission
official.
A trap was laid and plainclothesmen were stationed at the point.
The sleuths sprung into action after Samad and Prakash handed
over the documents to Shabbir Khan.
The three were arrested and booked under the Official Secrets
Act.
The two naval staff disclosed that Babul Nath was waiting near
the ITO bridge with some more documents.
Another raid was mounted and Babul Nath nabbed. Shabbir Khan was
handed over to the Ministry of External Affairs.
