COIMBATORE, OCT. 31. The 51-year-old Mr. K. Raghupathy, elected Deputy Mayor of Coimbatore, is one of the few sitting councillors who have been re-elected.

He started off as the Peelamedu town unit president in 1972 and had held posts in the Youth Congress urban unit and other town units subsequently. He was an executive committee member of the District Congress Committee in 1983. Joining the Tamil Maanila Congress in 1996, Mr. Raghupathy contested the civic polls and won from Ward No.1 that year. He is now the state general council member.

Mr. Raghupathy was one of the two candidates considered for the Deputy Mayor's post but it was given to his party colleague, Mr. Sanganur M. Velusamy. He was then rewarded with the post of the Leader of the TMC in the Council.

A small scale entrepreneur involved in the manufacture of steel furniture, he is also the general secretary of the South India Steel Furniture Manufacturers' Association.
