By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUNELVELI, OCT. 31. The election of the 54-year-old Mr. S. Viswanathan of the DMK as the Deputy Mayor of Tirunelveli for yet another term was on the expected lines. Mr. Viswanathan (elected from ward No. 44) polled 36 votes to defeat Mr. K. Paramasivan (ward 6), who got 20 votes. Of the 55 wards, 12 returned independents. Mr. Viswanathan managed to secure the votes of all but one independent, apart from the DMK front votes, which only proved his influence among all sections. Though the AIADMK was certain of defeat, it did not expect Mr. Viswanathan to win with a such a convincing margin of 16 votes. Mr. Viswanathan won the appreciation of all opposition parties, when he himself led a at a Council meeting, condemning the style of functioning of the then Mayor, despite her belonging to his own party. Speaking to presspersons after his election, Mr. Viswanathan assured them that he would rededicate himself to serve the poor and downtrodden.
