Farewell to A.S. Anand

NEW DELHI, OCT. 31. The Chief Justice of India (CJI), Dr. A.S.
Anand, who laid down office today was given a farewell by the
members of the Bar and the bench at a function held at the
Supreme Court this evening.
Dr. Anand had been a Supreme Court judge for a decade, including
three years as the CJI and a total tenure of 27 years as judge.
In his farewell address, Dr. Anand said that he fully cherished
the journey from the day he joined the apex court bench in 1991
and he used to admire at the judgments pronounced by eminent
judges of the court who had laid the great foundation for this
institution. He lauded the role of the members of the Bar in the
dispensation of justice.
Mr. Justice S.P. Bharucha (who succeeds Dr. Anand) said he fully
shared the praise of Mr. Anand by the Bar.
Mr. Kapil Sibal, president of the Supreme Court Bar Association,
recalled the landmark judgments pronounced by Dr. Anand,
particularly those on human rights.
The Attorney-General, Mr. Soli Sorabjee, said Dr. Anand's
judgment in the `D.K.Basu case' laying guidelines regarding
arrest and the one in the `Neelavathi case' granting compensation
for breach of public duty were quoted even abroad.
