NEW DELHI, OCT. 31. The President, Mr. K. R. Narayanan, and the Prime Minister, Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee, have condoled the death of the former Governor and civil servant, Mr. B. K. Nehru, in Kasauli this evening.

In his message, the President said the death of Mr. Nehru ``marks the passing of a spacious era of Indian administration of which he was an outstanding exemplar''. Further, according to Mr. Narayanan, ``he was at once a fine representative of Indian culture and a modern person with liberal ideas''.

Recalling his association with Mr. Nehru in the Indian Foreign Service, Mr. Narayanan described him as a distinguished civil servant, an able administrator and diplomat. ``In the post- Independence era, he played a significant role in economic policy making and administration as well as in high level diplomacy. With his brilliant mind and sterling qualities of independence and integrity, he nurtured a tradition of good governance in new India.''

The Prime Minister, in his condolence message, said the nonagenarian administrator was a person gifted with myriad talents. ``He was a diplomat par excellence and an eminent writer.''
