Ten hospitalised after inhaling noxious fumes
By Our Staff Reporter
CHENNAI, OCT. 30. Ten members of a family including five women
and a child were admitted to Stanley Medical College Hospital
when they took ill after inhaling noxious fumes in Seven Wells
late on Monday evening.
The fumes reportedly originated from a leak caused in a chemical
godown on Amman Koil Street in the area.
Doctors at the Hospital said the patients complained of
irritation of the eyes and developed complications of the
respiratory tract due to inhalation of fumes of sulphuric acid.
They were being kept under observation at the IMCU. Their
condition is stated to be ``stable''. The patients were moved in
at around 1 a.m., the doctors added.
The leak was first noticed at around 8-30 p.m. on Monday by the
residents of Amman Koil Street, adjoining the godown.
Fire service personnel, who rushed to the spot, brought out of
the godown the leaking drums that contained the chemicals and
doused the fumes. The fumes were suspected to be those of
ammonium chloride and some other phosphate chemicals, fire
service sources said.
The family which took ill due to the leak were residing on the
top floor of the building that housed the godown.
While residents of the entire colony ran out of their houses and
moved to a safer zone, members of this family had stayed back,
the doctors at Stanley Hospital said.
